The Home Depot Site- looking for a way to fix your house
There seems to be a Home Depot on a corner in almost every town in America these days. It says a lot about the state of our houses in this country. Many were built a long time ago and need fixing up on a regular basis and then there is the whole category of housing that was built in the last thirty years that was not built to last for any length of time. Now those homes are in need of major overhaul.
Every home owner and building owner knows the feeling. Something needs fixing or updating almost all the time. As the money comes available we all make some choices about what we would like to do and then we find a way to get it done. Now for most of us that means doing some or all of it ourselves. Thus was born the all in one center for getting the supplies to do it yourself. The Home Depot and the system that allows for universal inventory control made it possible to guide a population towards the mind set of doing the work and saving some money in the process.
However I would argue that the degradation of the trade industry in general had a lot to do with this trend. If you have ever waited and waited on a tradesperson to come and do the job, return your phone call, or do the job right the first time then you know what I am talking about. I don't want to belittle every trade's person in this country but unfortunately there are many who do not know the meaning of service.
So the Home Depot comes on the scene and now we have a huge warehouse store that advertises extensively, stocks a ton of items, professes to give you the knowledge you need to be able to do those fix it jobs at your house, and is close by to boot. How do you get the most out of that system? Do you get mad and go somewhere else? Or do you run in and find what you need and leave a happy satisfied customer of the Home Depot?
I live in an 80 year old house, well built but aging in various ways. There is a Home Depot several miles away from my neighborhood. I go there all the time. So much so that I know where everything is in the store without having to ask. That is a good thing because as you may know you can sometimes grow old trying to find that widget while wandering the aisles. If I know what I want and I know it is in the Home Depot then I run in and get it and check out as quickly as I can. God forbid I should get stuck behind the guy with a huge cart full of supplies wanting to pay with a check.
